What is Viscosupplementation?

Viscosupplements are injections of hyaluronic acid into arthrtic joints, which mimics the elasticity and thickness of healthy joint fluid. This helps the body temporarily restore its own lubricative and cushion for joint function.

When should I consider Viscosupplementation?

Viscosupplemenation is for people with osteoarthritis who have not received relief from using conservative measures like dietary changes, physiotherapy, orthotic prescription, bracing and over the counter medication. It can be used for all severities of osteoarthritis ranging from mild to severe.

What is the Viscosupplementation procedure like?

Viscosupplementation is a single-dose treatment injected directly into the affected joint. Each injection takes a few minutes. You will be given a local anesthetic before the injection. You may feel some pressure, but relatively comfortable. These injections are Ultrasound guided to ensure accurate needle placement.

What are the benefits of treatment with Viscosupplementation?

50% of patients will have some improvements in pain, swelling and stiffness lasting 6-12 months. Each individual responds differently to treatment and will experience different levels of relief, which can be seen within 1-2 weeks after the injection, with full effects after 1 month.

What are the side effects?

Temporary pain and swelling of the injected joint may occur after the injection. As with any procedure that penetrates the skin, there is a low risk of infection of 1/10,000. Patients may experience side effects such as temporary pain, swelling, joint warmth and stiffness, which are usually mild and do not last long.
